ONC Budget and Performance
The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) is charged with formulating the Federal Government’s health IT strategy and leading the development of effective policies, programs, and administrative efforts to advance better, safer, and more equitable healthcare through a nationwide interoperable health IT infrastructure.
ONC is charged with formulating the Federal Government’s health information technology (health IT) strategy and leading the development of effective policies, programs, and administrative efforts to advance better, safer, and more equitable healthcare through a nationwide interoperable health IT infrastructure.
ONC’s mission, adopted from the Federal Health IT Strategic Plan 2020 – 2025, is to improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities using technology and health information that is accessible when and where it matters most.
The annual budget requests and performance reports reflect thoughtful plans to advance progress to Congressional and Administration goals, and the objectives outlined in ONC’s authorizing and enabling legislation, including:
- 21st Century Cures Act (“Cures Act”), Pub. L. 114-255 (Dec. 13, 2016), amending Title XXX of the Public Health Service Act.
- Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (“MACRA”), Pub. L. 114-10 (Apr. 16, 2015).
- Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (“HITECH Act”), adopted as part of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, Pub. L. 111-5 (Feb. 17, 2009) and adding Title XXX (Health Information Technology and Quality) to the Public Health Service Act.
In addition to outlining a proposed funding level and expected outcomes, each President’s Budget Request also includes annual performance information describing highlights from the prior fiscal year.
