Data Element

Plurality
Description

The number of fetuses delivered live or dead at any time in the pregnancy regardless of gestational age, or if the fetuses were delivered at different dates in the pregnancy. (“Reabsorbed” fetuses, those which are not “delivered” (expulsed or extracted from the mother) should not be counted.) Include all live births and fetal losses resulting from this pregnancy.

CDC's comment on behalf of NACCHO for USCDI v5

Support - Because multiple birth order is in the patient demographics class, this element should be as well. Without it, LHDs could still determine if the birth was part of a multiple (by presence of the "multiple birth order" element, but would not be able to determine how many total fetuses their were in the delivery. This is important information for understanding potential long-term health risks and the need for preventative programming.

CDC's Consolidated Comment for USCDI v5

  • This element is also being proposed to be added under the Patient Demographics Data Class
  • This data element - "Plurality" (data class "Pregnancy Information") is a characteristic of the pregnancy. There is also a need to capture "Plurality" as a characteristic of a patient (data class "Patient Demographics/Information"), which, along with "Multiple Birth Order" (data class "Patient Demographics/Information") paints the complete picture of a patient born/delivered as part of a multiple birth.
