Steven Lane has been a practicing family physician and EHR user since 1989. In 1997 he became the first clinical informaticist at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, and subsequently at Sutter Health, serving as Sutter’s Clinical Informatics Director, Privacy, Information Security & Interoperability until 2022.  He served on the federal Department of Health & Human Services’ Health IT Advisory Committee from 2017 to 2023. As Chief Medical Officer of Health Gorilla, he is helping to lead one of the first Qualified Health Information Networks (QHINs) as part of the new national Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA) and one of the Qualified Health Information Organizations (QHIOs) facilitating the new California Data Exchange Framework (DxF).  Dr. Lane currently serves as co-chair of The Sequoia Project’s Privacy & Consent Workgroup, as a member of the HIMSS Public Policy Committee, and the Transitional Governance Committee for TEFCA and numerous other regional and national committees advancing the secure, privacy-protecting exchange of health data.
