See our latest data brief on Individuals’ Access and Use of Patient Portals and Smartphone Health Apps for statistics on access to online medical information, test results, and clinical notes after 2012. Notably, in 2024, 29% of individuals reported access to their medical information through an online medical record or patient portal with a clinical laboratory. However, it should be noted that patients may be able to access their test results performed by a clinical laboratory via their primary care provider’s portal or online medical record. The below Quick Stat is preserved for historical data.
Approximately 3 in 10 individuals (32%) reported that clinical laboratories had provided them direct access to test results, either in paper or electronic format, during the past 12 months in 2012.
