2020-2025 Federal Health IT Strategic Plan

2020-2025 Federal Health IT Strategic Plan

The goals, objectives, and strategies detailed in this Plan support the federal government’s broader aim to mitigate many of the healthcare challenges that exist in the U.S. These challenges include increased healthcare spending, poor health outcomes, increased rates of mental illness and substance use disorders, and inconsistent access to care, technology, and information. SDOH can contribute to disparities. As federal agencies and other partners work together toward a more interoperable healthcare system, they should consider the ways in which health IT can address these challenges equitably and in ways that do not exacerbate existing disparities associated with SDOH.

The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) supports HHS’s strategic approach to addressing SDOH. Along with the HHS SDOH Action Plan, the ASPE website also offers documents that (1) explain why HHS has identified addressing SDOH as a major priority for the Department; (2) describe HHS’ strategic approach, and specific actions the Department is taking to address SDOH; and (3) link how these actions build on evidence in the field on what works.
