HL7® FHIR

Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®) is a widely used application programming interface (API)-focused standard used to represent and exchange health information maintained by the standards development organization HL7® (Health Level 7). Now, a commonly used standard for exchanging health information, FHIR enables a more connected health ecosystem that strengthens health data interoperability, supports innovative applications, and promotes improved health outcomes.

Federal agencies are uniquely positioned to  unlock the full potential of a truly digital health ecosystem. By embracing FHIR and fostering collaboration within the health IT community, agencies can strengthen health data interoperability, support innovative applications, and promote improved health outcomes nationwide. The 2024 Draft Federal FHIR Action Plan facilitates shared decision-making among agencies, improves care coordination, and deepens patient engagement. This action plan is a periodically updated resource that will evolve alongside improvements and recommendations made by agencies, the community, and subject matter experts.

We are seeking further feedback from agency partners, the standards development community, and subject matter experts. Commenters can provide direct feedback using the functionality provided on the draft action plan to provide comments by 11:59 PM ET on Monday, November 25, 2024.
